Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday this week of Thanksgiving I noticed a conspicuous uptake in gym traffic. While unscientific, I am going to make the assumption that this is an attempt to mitigate the impending damage of Thanksgiving dinner. It’s not likely to work, and you shouldn’t try.
It’s Ok To Loosen Up On A Holiday
The bottom line is, fitness is not about what happens on birthdays, holidays, or other special occasions. It’s about what happens on ‘normal’ days when you are in full control of what you eat, how much you drink, and what your exercise habits are like. And if you do that stuff well, then you are more than entitled to let go and pig out a little on Thanksgiving, or whatever other holidays you choose to observe.
You Can’t Burn It Off
I harp on this a lot so I’ll keep it short. You can’t burn off enough calories in the gym to make up for Thanksgiving dinner. A single piece of pumpkin pie is likely to add up to more calories than an hour at the gym. Exercise is simply not a good weight loss strategy. There are many other, far more important reasons to be active and to train your body.
Relax And Have A Good Time
Honestly, one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself on a holiday is relax and have a good time. So do it, and don’t punish yourself for it. Remember, it’s what you do the rest of the year that should be your focus.
