A client challenged me, since I can sometimes be a little too focused on negatives, to come up with some affirmative fitness goals. What does affirmative goal setting mean? Well, since it’s a New Year, I’ll tell you here!

Affirmative Goal Setting

In this context I am referring to something that a client of mine was telling me. Some goals seek to avoid or remove something bad, while others seek to achieve something good. Excess weight, injuries, weakness, chronic pain, disease are all things that I try to help people remove or avoid. But of course, we also need to achieve things.

Affirmative goal setting means listing the things that someone should strive to add to their lives. Because I tend to be so focused on what to remove, my client challenged me to come up with the affirmative goals that I think belong in fitness. So, here they are:

Olympic Lifts

In order to perform an olympic lift effectively you must have excellent mobility, strength, and neuromuscular control. O-lifts are the finest application of everything you gain by exercising.

Manage Or Undertake Any Hike

We’re obsessed with intensity in fitness, but 30 minutes of brisk walking 5 days a week is enough to get health benefits. As such, I am going to say that a good cardiovascular goal is either to be able to do any hike you want at any time, or do some specific, challenging hike like the Appalachian Trail or the Inca Trail.

Make It Through Yoga

Yoga can be very hard, especially if you do not spend enough time working on flexibility and mobility. I think a very good goal is to be able to make it through a yoga class of your choice without dying.
